The Legend of The Fruitcakes

A decade ago, when the world was a little colder, a circle of friends in Hampton, Virginia, felt the warmth and weirdness of the Christmas season. In a matter of weeks, they huddled in the attic of an old house in the Wythe neighborhood and crafted an album of melodic, irreverent, profane, heartfelt, exuberant, silly, cranky holiday songs. “Eaten By Elves” was the product of a group of musicians who believed that, yes, the world did need a few more nuggets of yuletide melody – provided that they banished cliché and were burnished by heart or humor. It wasn’t exactly a hit, but “Eaten By Elves” was gobbled up by those with a taste for a strange form of sweetness …

Years rushed by and the globe warmed up a bit. Bands came, bands went. There were weddings, breakups, grudges, children, new jobs, new careers, arrivals, departures. The circle remained unbroken, though. It got wider – if not wilder.

To mark the 10th anniversary of The Fruitcakes’ debut, the collective has baked up a second serving of Christmas cheer and sneer, “Moist & Regifted.” It’s a set of songs that illustrates how love, friendship, humor and music can defeat cold and darkness — even pre-holiday stupidity.

So, open wide and take a big bite.
